Empowering the People!

We are honoured that one of our products made it into a new book entitled “100 Products that Empower People”.

The book is by US designer and author Emily Pilloton, and includes all kinds of inspiring products including the XO & XOXO laptop, low-cost prosthesis, and even the Adaptive Eyecare we also worked on. London Design Festival

The Olympics

Here at Concentrate we are thinking about the 2012 London Olympics and how we can help kids to be at their best both mentally and physically. We have some products ideas, along the lines of our “Food for Thought” Lunchbox that will encourage kids to take more exercise.

New Design

From hoover dustpans to fold flat electric plugs, or from shoes that dispense seeds wherever you go, to mouse smuggling devices the Royal College of Art show is always full of interesting and sometime wacky design. We hope to work with one or two of the recent graduates.

I had a good look round and was inspired by the creatively on show. It took me back to my time at the college, and my degree project “Self-heating Crockery” which ended up on Tomorrows World (heres an overly dramatic video I made about it). I even met prince Philip – who said I have a bulgy forehead – what a charmer.

Vision of the Future

Concentrate worked with Adspec to design reading glasses with liquid filled lenses, whose prescription can be altered by turning a dial on the side arm. These amazing glasses have been distributed in Africa, so that children can have their vision easily corrected and then can engage with the education system.

My Design Hero

I have had an inspiring week. Last night I went to a talk by Jonathan Ive from Apple (designer of the MacBook, iMac, i-Pod and i-phone). I was struck by how thoughtful and considered he was, in answering questions, and in how he explained his method of designing things. He was also incredibly humble, especially given his many achievements.

During his discussion he said how it is easy to do “new and different” things, but hard to do “genuinely better” – what a wise fella and all-round hero!
